GM to detail Volt battery warranty
Execs seek to end concerns about new technology's coverage
Chevy Volt Forum - General Motors Co. is expected to announce warranty coverage today for expensive lithium-ion batteries essential to the Chevrolet Volt electric car, according to a person familiar with the plan.
The warranty program could ease fears among some consumers worried about buying a vehicle that relies on first-generation, and relatively expensive, battery technology.
Details will be unveiled during an event at GM's battery assembly plant in Brownstown Township. GM also will provide an update on validation and testing of the lithium-ion battery and details on the start of regular battery-pack production.
New power train technology can rattle customers, said industry analyst Aaron Bragman of IHS Automotive.
"There was a lot of concern about longevity and durability of the battery when hybrids first started rolling out, but the batteries have been proven to be almost completely bulletproof," he said. "It may be simply GM is coming up with a service that will help put a customer's mind at ease."
